Kitchen Witchcraft:

An Intro to Culinary Uses of Medicinal Herbs! Level 1

This is an introductory course in how to use medicinal herbs in your cooking and food. This course will have useful content for both folks who cook from scratch and folks who tend to eat packaged and pre-prepared foods. We will talk about medicinal and culinary uses of 10+ herbs in this level 1 course. We will touch on the spiritual beliefs/uses of some of these herbs as well. The goal of this class is for students to come away with a better understanding of different plants and their beneficial uses, and with ideas for how to practically incorporate the magick and medicine of the plants into their lives and food.

Mo Karnage has been studying herbalism since childhood, most recently in 1.5 years in the apprenticeship program at Owlcraft Healing Ways in Scottsville Va. Mo lives in Cuckoo, VA at Raven’s Feather Farm. Mo works in construction by day, and juggles family, writing haiku, caring for animals and plants, running, and practicing herbalism by night.

Emotional Trauma and Stress Self Care

As the Richmond community received more bad news yesterday regarding the pedophilia of a local comedian I wanted to take the time to remind folks of some important self care. I know when I am stressed out or traumatized I often forget to do the things I usually know to do. 

Emotional stress and trauma are real. They take a physical toll on the body. When you are reeling you can do physical things to support yourself.

1. Drink water. Especially since we are having extemely hot weather anyways. Water is so important and you can hrlp your coping ability a ton by increasing your water consumption. Consider if you are sweating or crying a lot, and increase even more.

2. Eat deeply nourishing foods. We feel drained during and after extreme emotion and stress because we are. Give your body back the vitamins, minerals, and nutrition it needs. Broths, bone broth, nettle tea or food, oats or milky oats, and more can all help you get the nourishment you need. Include some probiotic sources like yogurt or fermented foods and beverages.

3. Baths or showers. Wash off the sweat. Refresh and soothe yourself. Use bath salts or sugar scrubs or something you find luxurious.

4. Smudge. Using a sacred plant like sage or palo santo smudge yourself and your space. Use incense or an essential oil burner or whatever you have that works.

5. Take a nap. Rest. Reset your body.

6. Take an internet break. The internet is the worst.

7. Meet up with friends to talk in person. Talk about what is stressing you out if that helps, or just talk about other stuff if you need a break.

8. Exercise and/or go outside. Sometimes the best way to cope is to spend time in nature and get some endorphins going. A walk in the woods, pumping iron at the gym, or running may help you cope.

9. Look to the plants. If you are into herbal medicine at all go to your herbal teas and tinctures. Chamomile tea and other relaxing blends are available at almost all grocery stores these days. Try a tea to soothe your nerves.

10. Express yourself. Sometimes writing or making or or music can help you deal with the emotions you struggle with. Give yourself an outlet.

We can’t stop people from their bad behavior or always protect them from their demons. We can not know what is in others’ hearts. The best we can do is nurture ourselves and those around us. My heart is with everyone reeling today.

2015 New Years Resolutions!

2014 was overall an excellent year. I was able to travel to Key West and get a break from the winter. I drove a crazy bus full of dogs to Indiana and back, drove from California to Virginia, spent a week in the mountains, and went on numerous camping trips. I adopted a third dog, Tatertot, and learned to walk 3 pitbulls at the same time. I went to a variety of city council meetings and protests on issues from No Stadium in Shockoe Bottom to #blacklivesmatter to Monroe Park. I lost friends, among them amazing humans Ian Graham, Cayman Mooney, and Birch Wood. I worked, from writing, to editing, to babysitting, to stagehand, to carpentry, and starting my own business so I can work for myself. I supported neat projects my friends started, hosted bands, cooked for food not bombs, wrote zines, went to game nights and played games with friends, went to brunch several times, and held potluck events! I competed semi regularly in poetry events, took an herbal medicine class, made it to the Field Day of the Past and the State Fair! I did a lot of neato things and I can’t even remember all of them!

So here are my plans for 2015!!! I’m trying to set myself up for success by having starting dates and game plans for some of these goals. I’m ready!

1. Save up money using the plan where you match the dollar amount with the week number, so each week you save money, starting with $1 the first week and ending with $52. (more…)
