Two of my 2015 resolution plans

Two of my 2015 resolutions are ones that come with handy little charts. I figured I’d share the charts so others can use them as a resource. Cause every day can be the day that you change your life. Take a step in the direction of your dreams. Or just do some situps and save some money. You know, whatever works!

Richmond’s A Christmas Carol – Past, Present, No Future #RVA ?

Soundtrack to the article…

The hope for every New Year is for a year that is better than the last. For Richmond, that hope is against all odds as our local government sets us up again and again for epic failures. It is up to you, the people of Richmond, to take a stand against the corruption, the incompetence, the utter lack of transparency, and the bad priorities pushed fervently by the local politicians and businessmen.

I present to Richmond, a slightly seasonally late Christmas Carol, with the hopes that being visited by the ghosts of Richmond’s past, present, and future will be a cautionary vision, leading the city to better decision making down the line.

I would compare Mayor Jones to Scrooge, and direct this message at him, but I’ve never been one to count on people in power or want to reinforce hierarchy, and frankly the man never has seemed to give a damn. Instead, this goes to the people of Richmond, the ones capable of rising up to change Richmond for the better and take it out of the hands of greedy developers and their ilk.

While there are many Ghosts of Richmond Past I could choose from, I’ll focus on a recent one – the Redskins Training Camp. The problems with the public spending on the Redskins Training Camp start with the bad investment, go to the bad decisions for the school system, the disproportionate spending of money in a patriarchical way, and end with the indisputable racism of the team’s name (ah but that doesn’t stop the white people). But the financial side of the Redskins Training Camp is what is relevant here, so let me run the numbers by you.

The City of Richmond paid about 10 million dollars for the original construction of the Redskins Training Camp. This of course happens at the same general time period where the City repeatedly refuses to put money towards public schools that are falling apart on students’ heads and relinquishes a public park to control by a private organization with gentrification plans over a measely 3 million dollars. WRIR in the morning!

I find it incredibly awesome to be able to sit down with the morning paper, a cup o joe, and the radio on.

WRIR 97.3 LP FM, the local independent radio station, makes me feel connected to the music scene and international current events, depending on what show is on air. It pushes me to listen to stuff I otherwise wouldn’t choose on my own, and dang if I don’t find myself enjoying it. It is background for cooking breakfast and dancing around, or just trying to remember where I put my shoes.

Starting Monday January 5th I’m going to be acting as the Board Operator for the 8am-10am shift again, and it’s been a year or two so I am really excited to be back involved with such a great project! (more…)

2015 New Years Resolutions!

2014 was overall an excellent year. I was able to travel to Key West and get a break from the winter. I drove a crazy bus full of dogs to Indiana and back, drove from California to Virginia, spent a week in the mountains, and went on numerous camping trips. I adopted a third dog, Tatertot, and learned to walk 3 pitbulls at the same time. I went to a variety of city council meetings and protests on issues from No Stadium in Shockoe Bottom to #blacklivesmatter to Monroe Park. I lost friends, among them amazing humans Ian Graham, Cayman Mooney, and Birch Wood. I worked, from writing, to editing, to babysitting, to stagehand, to carpentry, and starting my own business so I can work for myself. I supported neat projects my friends started, hosted bands, cooked for food not bombs, wrote zines, went to game nights and played games with friends, went to brunch several times, and held potluck events! I competed semi regularly in poetry events, took an herbal medicine class, made it to the Field Day of the Past and the State Fair! I did a lot of neato things and I can’t even remember all of them!

So here are my plans for 2015!!! I’m trying to set myself up for success by having starting dates and game plans for some of these goals. I’m ready!

1. Save up money using the plan where you match the dollar amount with the week number, so each week you save money, starting with $1 the first week and ending with $52. (more…)

Missing the Mark – Racism and Reporting

This was an article I wrote on Dec. 24, 2014, and submitted to a local paper. Not hearing back from them since the holidays, I figured I might as well get it out here. This is a response to an article written by Mark Holmberg which you can look up if you want to read it, I don’t want to give it the clicks.

Mark Holmberg is a staple of the Richmond journalism scene. I remember being a kid and reading his columns in the Richmond Times Dispatch. As an adult I have been interviewed by Mark for his new gig at WTVR CBS 6, and seen him at numerous protests and events around town. He’s been in my home on several occasions. Mark is a human, you know, like the rest of us, and a perfectly nice guy in person. Sometimes, Mark’s perspective which he infuses his reports with is sympathetic or similar to my position on an issue. But there are other times where Mark’s reporting makes a strong case for the old concept that if you don’t have nuthin nice to say don’t say nuthin at all.

Unfortunately, the views Mark has chosen to broadcast regarding the Eric Garner and Mike Brown protests fall into this category. His December 21st article, starts off badly and doesn’t get any better. He seems to draw ties from the world wide protests against police brutality, murder of people of color, institutional racism and impunity from accountability for the police to the mentally ill man who killed his partner, a woman of color, and then two NYPD officers. There is no connection between #blacklivesmatter protests and Ismaaiyl Brinsley, the man who shot the two cops, and there is no reason to try to delegitimize organizing and protest efforts by people of color and their allies around these issues based on faulty logic.

Mark draws rapid, trite conclusions, about both the Eric Garner and Mike Brown decisions. I have been patient with white people who do not understand or sympathize with the Mike Brown murder and Ferguson situation. I know it is hard for folks to see past their white privilege, especially without video evidence (sigh). But white people need to learn to listen to people of color and believe what is being said. White privilege protects white folks from certain experiences and blinds us to certain realities. (more…)
